The last few hours of the game also just dragged for me. I can't imagine playing this game on Insane. Except it's padded out by sections where if you get seen you're dead. My main complaint about the first game (and especially its DLC) is how often instead of hiding I found my best option to just run around and dodge the enemies, and that's made even worse here. Made worse by the fact that the AI has gotten even worse.

Then there are the points where it sinks somehow even lower than Outlast 1 in terms of the sheer amount of boring chases. Stuff like religion and schools (especially schools at night) can be positively terrifying, and there's points where Outlast 2 really works well. On the one hand, I absolutely adore the atmosphere and themes. A little gorey/graphic for some maybe, but not scary.Įxtremely conflicted and somewhat disappointed by the game. There wasn't a massive amount holding my enjoyment gameplay wise. I was doing it mainly for the visual enjoyment. I did enjoy that.Īt times I felt I was just forcing myself to go on. But the switches between the school and current timeline were pretty cool. Bit of a waste in a way.Īnd the story was a little too out there for me. You were constantly on the run from something. But I felt like there wasn't enough time to stop and take it all in. Visuals were stunning, audio was fantastic. But which point, it's not longer a thrilling chase, but a chore and a bore.

If not, you die, and have to go again, until you know the right path. It was pure luck if you took the right path. I sort of feel the original was better in most ways. However I also get the criticism of the new one. Take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, as I wasn't a huge fan of the first Outlast despite enjoying the horror genre, though I definitely understand the enjoyment. It's fair to be critical when you once innovated with your game, then stick to the same thing when everyone else is on board, Halo being a good example of this, and the widespread criticism of CoD being similar as well. And now, upon releasing a very similar game, the genre has been done many times in this style, and arguably better by other games, RE7 I see was mentioned for just that. The issue I seem to see with Outlast 2, is the fact that when it released originally, was that only a few games were doing what it did. I would argue that although Uncharted has remained similar to it's previous entries, they add mechanics that do change the approach to the game. And that Gears of War, although praised for it's quality, was described as not having changed much, and therefore only recommended to new comers or long time fans. I'd like to make a point, and not trying to start an argument, but many people have been critical of Halo's moves lately in terms of it's recent releases, mainly how 5 had no co-op, or innovation, and how Halo Wars was okay, but not great.
